Whether flower or vegetable, gardens are a common sight in every section
of the world. They may be nestled in the backyard of a suburban home,
or sprawled out in a field in the country. Regardless of the location,
gardens are everywhere and they serve a few distinct purposes for mankind.
These purposes can range from providing food to providing entertainment
and beauty.
Gardens have existed since the beginning of mankind. However, historic
gardens were used mainly to grow food. It was not until approximately
1500 BC in Egypt that gardens took on another purpose. Historians believe
that Egyptians were the first civilization to cultivate and maintain
gardens for entertainment and beauty.
Today there are many types of gardens growing across the world. Some
of these gardens include: vegetable, flower, botanical, rose, urban,
and container gardens. The two most common types of gardens grown in
and around homes are vegetable and flower. Vegetable gardens may be
grown for many reasons. Usually the top reason for growing a vegetable
garden is for food. However, it may also be grown for purposes of education,
entertainment, and beauty.
Flower gardens are another type of garden that may be grown near a
home. These plots can include a variety of flower species. Some of the
most popular flowers that might be grown are roses, and/or tulips. If
taken care of, a home flower garden can be entered in many decorative
contests and its greenery may or may not win a prize.
In large cities, urban gardens are a great way to bring a bit of nature
to the hustle and bustle. For a small apartment this may mean a series
of containers indoors with good ventilation and lighting. These are
called container gardens. Container gardens can also be tended to on
a terrace or patio.
Container gardens are not the only gardens cultivated in the city.
If the space is available, gardens can be grown on a roof, in a window
box, or in a neighborhood plot. They are the ideal way to get fresh
flowers and vegetables for a low price.
Large and commercial-sized gardens can have many reasons for existing.
For example, botanical gardens are large gardens usually open to the
public. These places provide education, entertainment, scientific research,
display, and beauty. A variety of plants grow in botanical gardens.
These gardens can be maintained by a professional staff of botanists
and horticulturalists, and are usually open to the public for tours
and viewing.
A rose garden is another type of garden often grown for beauty and
education. Rose gardens can showcase many species of roses and other
flowers. One of the most popular rose gardens in the United States is
the garden at the White House. It borders the famous Oval Office and
the west wing of the building.
